The retreat will be held at Tamagawa Centre for the duration of one weekend on September 18-20, 2009. Participants, staff, and volunteers will receive accommodation in cabins provided by the facility. As part of the contractual agreement, Tamagawa Centre will also provide meals as part of its catering services.

Dry land fly-fishing instruction and other activities associated with the retreat will take place in the space available at Tamagawa Retreat Centre. Actual fly-fishing will occur on Holden and Ellison Lakes, which is a 45 minute drive from the main location of the retreat.

7 pm - Meet and Greet, Introductions, Weekend schedule


Saturday September 19, 2009

9-5 pm - Fly fishing Introduction, equipment, casting, entomology, fly tying

7-9 pm - Evening program


Sunday September 20, 2009

9-10 am - Travel to Ellison Lake

10-2 pm - Catch and release fishing

3-5 pm - DOTF Program Celebration/wrap up

In Preparation for the Event

Participants will be asked to discuss areas of the post treatment phase of their recovery including the impact that the experience of breast cancer has had on them, current perception of their quality-of-life, factors impacting their quality-of-life.

During the Event

Participants will attend an all inclusive weekend fly fishing retreat where they will be given fly fishing instruction from fly fishing volunteers from IWFF. Breast cancer professionals involved with the project will participate by providing information on details of recovery and survivorship. Professionals will include the individuals listed as part of the planning committee as well as other colleagues and volunteers that develop an interest in participating in this project. The retreat will operate in a way that facilitates bonding between survivors, relationship building with professionals, relaxation and healing in a natural setting, as well as intrinsic benefits within each participant

After the Event

Participants will be asked to reflect individually on the impact that the fly fishing retreat has had on the factors that relate to their quality of life and breast cancer survivorship. Areas of interest would include social, emotional, physical, spiritual and intellectual impacts. Observation about the participant’s intention to pursue fly fishing as a leisure pursuit will also be collected
